5 Reasons to Visit Cesky Krumlov

When we returned from our backpacking adventure through Europe, we were often greeted with the ever so popular question, β€œWhat was your favourite city?” And despite all of the memories and adventures that came with our first extended trip, it was hard to pick a favourite.

There are so many things that make each destination different and it's hard enough to compare, let alone choose a winner. But I think that every now and then, you find yourself in a place that gives you an indescribable feeling - a memorable place where you feel like you've left a piece of your heart. At least that's how I felt in the Czech Republic when we decided to visit Cesky Krumlov.

Cesky Krumlov

If you're traveling to the Czech Republic, you're likely visiting Prague. The castles and beer alone make Prague worthy of a visit but hopefully you'll be inclined to venture south and explore more of what this country has to offer. To help persuade you, here are 5 reasons why you should see Cesky Krumlov for yourself.

1. Carefree Transportation

Getting to this charming Czech city is really quite easy and convenient. A bus from Prague to Cesky Krumlov will take roughly 3.5 hours which was more affordable for us than taking the train at the time. We booked a non-stop bus through Student Agency which departs from the Na KnΓΕΎecΓ bus station several times throughout the day. The route ends at the main bus station in Cesky Krumlov and it was a short walk to our hostel from there. The town itself is also very walkable and easy to navigate on foot.

2. Southern Hospitality

We spent one night at the Krumlov House, a place that I was looking forward to visiting after reading the wonderful reviews online. Cal and Carolyn made us feel so at home and did everything possible to ensure we had a great experience both at the hostel and in the town. It honestly felt like we were visiting distant relatives that were sharing insider recommendations, tips and advice to make sure we were making the most of our time in their hometown.

3. Delicious Food

We had such a great meal at a reconstructed renaissance tavern called Ε atlava. I definitely recommend both the food and the service here. It was suggested that we make a reservation which helps ensure you get a table, especially during peak season. Our table was right in front of the fireplace used to cook their meats and you can imagine how good it smelled. Not the place to find a vegetarian, but definitely a restaurant with delicious meats and an even better candlelit atmosphere.

4. Panoramic Views

A walk about town will make you feel like you've stepped back in time. The way the river winds and wraps it's way through the center of Cesky Krumlov makes for great views from just about every vantage point. The buildings, bridges and town square are so well restored and it really makes you appreciate the European architecture.

5. Small Town Charm

After spending a few days in bustling Prague, it was certainly a relief to escape to a city that moves at a much slower pace. In Cesky Krumlov, there are not many options for overnight guests and most tourists arrive from Prague on day trip tours. That means that once 5 o'clock came around, busloads of tourists were leaving and we felt like we had the town to ourselves. I'm sure the feeling would be different in the warmer months when more people stay in town but we really enjoyed exploring the small town charm of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

As is the case with many of our favourite destinations, my only regret in Cesky Krumlov was not staying longer.
